Dare 2: dare you to learn something new every day

Photobucket Watercolor, from The Dusty Caravan, inspired by Tom Waits

Okay, here's the speel from the second part of Kogan's book of dares for ecstatic living....Everytime you learn something, you rejuvenate yourself and add another dimension to your life. Don’t worry about how what you learn fits into your life; if something interests you, learn about it, invest some time in it, and color your life with what you learn from it. Learning is not just an occasional activity but a way of life, an attitude that keeps our eyes, ears, brains, and heart open to as many new experiences and ideas as possible.  Here are some of Kogan’s suggestions (am sure you can add plenty to the list).
  • Read one magazine or newspaper article every day from sections that you usually skip.
  • Sign up for a daily learning email. For example, check out www.wordsmith.org, where you can sign up to get a daily email with a new word and its definition.
  • Take a different way home and check out new and unfamiliar places along the way.
  • Whip up a recipe you've never tried to cook before.
  • Learn a skill you've always wished you had...plenty of suggestions here!
Now the pics with this post give a clue to what I'm trying to learn...yes the guitar...nothing fancy, just the basic chords.  I think tho that I have a mental block about 'practise' that goes back to piano lessons in childhood. The guitar sits on a chair and seems to taunt me as I walk past 'practise! practise! you'll never learn unless you practise for at least an hour every day' and of course that all seems too hard so I don't do it.  So, here I am after two weeks and I can only play two chords if I'm looking at the instruction sheet. Never mind, suppose as long as I keep at it, by the end of the year I'll have to have progressed won't I?

oh forgot to remind you (and myself) that even if you take on this dare you still have to keep up dare 1 and do something fun every day!

I think it's great that you are trying to learn something new every day. Things like this keep us all motivated. Very interesting.

When I was a child we had a tradition wherein at the dinner table each night, those of us kids in school had to share at least one thing we learned that day. I adored school, read a ton on my own, and have always tried to learn multiple new things everyday, so I rather enjoyed this ritual and think that in many ways, I still carry on with it in my head to this day.

I think it's great that you are strumming your two guitar chords! I can't sing worth a damn but there are a couple of songs I want to 'master'

I am a willing fan of shaking things up, Chrisy ! Ha, as if I have a choice sometimes!

I'll think of this challenge and see what comes :-)

Love, love!

So nice that you're learning the guitar. It's awful how those old 'tapes' from childhood come back to haunt us and interfere with our goals. But, you'll overcome this and you'll master the guitar. I just know it.
Really like the idea of learning something new every day. I think it keeps us sharp and feeling alive. I don't do that now. But I think I'll try this. I believe that all learning changes us, so I'll work on changing for the better.
Thanks for this Chrisy.

Wonderful advice, and I am one who has always knocked the theory that you can't teach an old dog new tricks.

Thanks again for posting the ideas from the "Dare" book! I, too, believe that everyday holds at least one lesson for me!

I learn a new origami almost everyday and since it's close to Valentinus Day I've been learning how to make all kinds of different origami hearts!

Every Friday, I read articles from the etsy blog and every once in awhile accidentally read one I'd never read, but I like the idea of consciously reading from articles I'd normally skip!

Thank you for the inspiration, it's going to go along ways towards my HoarderRehab recovery!

Ellen, what wonderful posts you have. As different as our blogs are, I think we both try to do that which others aren't doing.
