Regrets and old tin photos

Photobucket
Yes, it is a strange combo - a post about the regrets of the dying married with contemporary tintypes but for some reason I feel they go well together.  Maybe it's the nostalgia that old tin photos evoke. There's more information towards the end of the post about the art project that's producing contemporary tin art works. The list of 'regrets' comes from the book 'The Top 5 regrets of the Dying' by palliative care nurse Bronnie Ware.
1. I wish I'd had the courage to live a life true to myself, not the life others expected of me
This was the most common regret of all. When people realise that their life is almost over and look back clearly on it, it is easy to see how many dreams have gone unfulfilled. Most people had not honoured even a half of their dreams and had to die knowing that it was due to choices they had made, or not made.

2. I wish I didn't work so hard
This came from every male patient that I nursed. They missed their children's youth and their partner's companionship. Women also spoke of this regret. But as most were from an older generation, many of the female patients had not been breadwinners. All of the men I nursed deeply regretted spending so much of their lives on the treadmill of a work existence.

3. I wish I'd had the courage to express my feelings

Many people suppressed their feelings in order to keep peace with others. As a result, they settled for a mediocre existence and never became who they were truly capable of becoming. Many developed illnesses relating to the bitterness and resentment they carried as a result.

4. I wish I had stayed in touch with my friends and family
Often they would not truly realise the full benefits of old friends and family members until their dying weeks and it was not always possible to track them down. Many had become so caught up in their own lives that they had let golden friendships slip by over the years. There were many deep regrets about not giving friendships the time and effort that they deserved. Everyone misses their friends when they are dying.

5. I wish that I had let myself be happier
This is a surprisingly common one. Many did not realise until the end that happiness is a choice. They had stayed stuck in old patterns and habits. The so-called 'comfort' of familiarity overflowed into their emotions, as well as their physical lives. Fear of change had them pretending to others, and to their selves, that they were content. When deep within, they longed to laugh properly and have silliness in their life again.

Well I’m used to seeing old tintypes but I had no idea that some photographers were resurrecting the technique. I came across the work of Meghann Mary Gilligan of the Tin Gypsy Project on Etsy. Meghann rescued and rehabilitated the a 1961 vintage travel trailer and retrofitted the ‘Tin Gypsy’ as a mobile darkroom, specially designed for the practice of antique photographic techniques. Meghann says, I am most interested in the salt printing and wet-plate collodion processes. I make my own photographic emulsions from scratch and all of my prints and tintype creations are handmade and one of a kind.

I find my inspiration from the historical origins of photography and its earliest practitioners, who were equal parts mad scientist, adventurer and artist. Working with large- format cameras that are 60-90 years old and using antiquarian photographic processes is an incredibly enjoyable way to make images. I love moving the knobs and bellows on the camera to focus, pouring the emulsion on the aluminium plates, putting salt prints out in the sunshine to develop and, most especially, finding new creations to craft from salt prints and tintypes. Visit the Tin Gypsy Project Store to purchase one of these unique works of art and follow the adventures, travels, and creative experiments of the Tin Gypsy Project on a blog here and on Facebook here.

Who knows?

Photobucket

from The Olive Bird

Such a deep silence surrounds me, that I think I hear
 moonbeams striking on the windows.

In my chest,
a strange voice is awakened
and a song plays inside me
a longing that is not mine.

They say that ancestors, dead before their time,
with young blood still in their veins,
with great passion in their blood,
with the sun still burning in their blood
 come,
 come to continue to live
 within us
 their unfinished lives.

Such a deep silence surrounds me, that I think I hear
 moonbeams striking on the windows.

O, who knows, soul of mine, in which chest you will sing
 you also, after centuries,
 in soft ropes of silence,
on harps of obscurity - the drowned longing
and the pleasure of living torn? Who knows?
Who knows?
‘Silence’ by Lucian Blaga
Lucian Blaga (May 9, 1895 - May 6, 1961) The ninth son of a parish priest, Blaga grew to become one of Romania's foremost poets and philosophers. Born in Transylvania, his father died in 1908 leaving the family destitute and forcing Blaga to leave secondary school. Until the age of four he purportedly never uttered a word; a period of his childhood that he later described as, ‘under the sign of the incredible absence of word’ and ‘mute as a swan’.

Baby love...

Photobucket
Parents bring home a newly-born baby. Their 4-year-old daughter insists on speaking to her new sibling - alone, she insists. The amused parents leave, but stand at the doorway for easy eavesdropping. Their daughter gets close to the infant and urgently whispers: 'Quick! Tell me where we came from and why we're here. I'm beginning to forget!' (story from Richard Rohr's book, Things Hidden)

I've just discovered Franciscan writer and speaker Richard Rohr through a dear friend. After listening to one talk I can see much wisdom there. I love Rohr's idea that we come into the world as pure spiritual beings and it's only through conditioning over the first seven years that this knowing fades. But we can reclaim this knowing through meditation /prayer and reflection.

For all those precious babies I've had the honor of knowing -

I talk and you listen
that's all you do
And yet I see
in the eyes of you
The pattern of life
fall into place
The truth reflected
in your face.

ps I have no idea where I found the fabulous animated gif at the top of this post but big thanks to whoever composed it.

When Enough's Enough

Photobucket

As I sit and meditate I have moments of being mindful/staying present in the moment. Glimpses. I feel within myself a spaciousness that allows me to observe without reacting. I can observe what is happening right now without wishing it were different. I can enjoy the pleasant without trying to grasp onto it as I know it will change. I can accept the unpleasant without being fearful that it’ll never end, because it will. These moments are enough to sustain me.
Photobucket

Enough. These few words are enough.
If not these words, this breath.
If not this breath, this sitting here.
This opening to the life
we have refused
again and again
until now.
Until now

Taking off those red shoes.....

Photobucket
photograph from Suitcase in Berlin
The Red Shoes by Anne Sexton
I stand in the ring
In the dead city
And tie on the red shoes…
They are not mine.
They are my mother’s.
Her mother’s before.
Handed down like an heirloom
But hidden like shameful letters.
The house and the street where they belong
Are hidden and all the women, too,
Are hidden…
Photobucket
doll from Modicum
All those girls
Who wore the red shoes,
Each boarded a train that would not stop.
Stations flew by like suitors and would not stop.
They all danced like trout on the hook
They were played with.
They tore off their ears like safety pins.
Their arms fell off them and became hats
Their heads rolled off and sang down the street.
And their feet---oh God, their feet in the market place---
Their feet, those two beetles, ran from the corner
And then danced forth as if they were proud.
Surely, people exclaimed,
Surely they are mechanical. Otherwise…But the feet went on.
The feet could not stop.
They were wound up like a cobra that sees you.
They were elastic pulling itself in two.
They were islands during an earthquake.
They were ships colliding and going down.
Never mind you and me.
They could not listen.
They could not stop.
What they did was the death dance.
What they did would do them in...

Excerpt from Women Who Run With The Wolves by Clarisa Pinkola Estes -
The great healer carries wisdom, goodness, knowing, caregiving, and all the other things associated with a healer. So, it is good to be generous and kind and helpful like the great healer archetype. But only to a point. Beyond that, it exerts a hindering influence on our lives. The “heal everything, fix everything” compulsion is a major entrapment….While archetypes may emanate through us for short periods of time….nobody can emanate an archetype continuously….they are ideals not achievable by humans, and not meant to be….one must learn to say “Halt” and “Stop the music,” and of course mean it. So those who are tired, temporarily sick of the world, who are afraid to take time off, afraid to stop, wake up already! Lay a blanket over the banging gong that cries for you to infinitely help this, help that, help this other thing. It will be there to uncover again, if you wish it so, when you come back.

sculpture from Adrien Art
If we do not go home (soul home) when it is time, we lose our focus….I advocate using those methods that require no props, no special location, and that can be accomplished as easily in a minute as in a day. This means using one’s mind to summon the soul-self. In a state of solitude we can assess on a continuing basis: habitat, work, creative life, family, mate, children, mother/father, sexuality, spiritual life, and so on. The measurement used in assessment is simple: What needs less? And: What needs more? Over time, as you practice, you will find yourself designing your own queries to soul. Sometimes you may have only one question. Other times you maybe have none whatsoever and just wish to rest on the rock near the soul, breathing together.

Such wisdom! I'm getting better at taking off those red shoes. Resting. Breathing. How about you?

Frida's Birthday Giveaway

PhotobucketPhotobucketPhotobucket
In honor of Frida Kahlo's birthday (6 July 1907) let's celebrate with some lovely artwork, video footage of Frida and a giveaway! I've pondered why I'm drawn to Frida's story and to her work. For me it's as if she epitomises the essence of all of us - both the light and the dark sides.  Like all of us Frida had moments of magnificence. Like all of us she had moments of wretchedness. Todos somos uno.
